Save the world with the most environmentally friendly wheat-alternative
Did you know intermediate wheatgrass (IWG, scientific name of Kernza™) is a perennial with an incredibly dense root structure that helps prevent soil loss, improves carbon sequestration, and improves groundwater quality?
IWG has been around in the US since the 1980s, so it’s not as new of a crop as you might think! Breeders from Pennsylvania to Kansas, Minnesota and beyond have been working on developing varieties of IWG that grow and produce grain on a scale similar to wheat that retains all the environmental benefits of the perennial itself.

Did you know that IWG is higher in protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and minerals than conventional annual wheat varieties?
IWG has been proven to be substantially higher in key nutrients that consumers today are becoming more aware of the importance of in their diets. Looking at your local grocery store, you might see a plethora of options that claim to be high or excellent sources of protein, packing sometimes 20 grams of protein per serving! With that can come challenges in product quality, but for crops naturally higher in protein, like IWG, this is much less of an issue.
Feel good helping support Midwestern family farms being more sustainable
It can be tough being a farmer that doesn’t solely grow commodity crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans in the United States’ Midwest.
Markets don’t always exist for new crops that might be better for your local community and local environment. Farmers are often given subsidies for commodity crops by the USDA, making it a financial no-brainer for those crops to be grown. With new crops and new farming methods comes uncharted territory that isn’t always incentivized like these commodity crops. Consumers making environmentally-conscious purchasing decisions is key to driving these changes that lead to increases in growing demands and increase the number of farmers being able to financially opt-into improving their environmental sustainability.
